Truth is Sufficient

Discernment & the Voice of God

Hearing from God Today

Learn how to weigh what you hear — and know what the voice of the Lord is saying to you personally in this season.

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. — John 10:27

There is a question that never goes out of season — and in this hour, it may be more pressing than ever: Is God still speaking? The answer is yes. Not in a general, theological sense alone. He is speaking to you — specifically, personally, intentionally. The question is not whether He is talking. The question is whether you are positioned to hear.

God Still Speaks

Hebrews 1:1–2 reminds us that God, who spoke at various times and in various ways through the prophets, has spoken to us in these last days through His Son. The Son has not gone silent. Through His Word, through His Spirit, through the still small voice that cuts through the noise of life — He is communicating.

What He said to a generation in the wilderness, He is still capable of saying to a generation living at the end of the age. The methods may vary. His intention does not. He speaks because He loves, and He speaks because He leads.

“And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.”

Isaiah 30:21

That promise was not for Isaiah’s generation alone. It is the posture God takes toward every believer who is willing to slow down long enough to listen.

Five Channels

How God Speaks

God is not a God of silence. He has always communicated with His people — and He uses more than one channel to do it. Know them well.

01

His Written Word

The Bible is the primary and most reliable channel through which God speaks. Every other voice — no matter how compelling — must be tested against it. The logos is not a starting point; it is the plumb line.

2 Timothy 3:16–17
02

The Holy Spirit

The Spirit of God bears witness with your spirit. He speaks through conviction, through the illumination of Scripture, and through the quiet prompting that arrests your attention in the middle of an ordinary moment.

Romans 8:14–16
03

Dreams & Visions

God promised in Joel 2 — and Peter confirmed at Pentecost — that in the last days His people would dream dreams and see visions. This channel is active. It is not surplus; it is covenant.

Joel 2:28 • Acts 2:17
04

The Prophetic Voice

God still speaks through His servants. The prophetic gift is given for edification, exhortation, and comfort — not spectacle. Receive it with gratitude, but never without the filter of the Word.

1 Corinthians 14:3
05

The Witness of Peace

The peace of God is not just a feeling — it is a governor. Colossians 3:15 says to let it rule. The absence of peace over a decision or direction is itself a word. Do not override it with urgency.

Colossians 3:15 • Philippians 4:7

One Important Reminder

These channels work together, not in competition. The believer who is rooted in the Word, attentive to the Spirit, and accountable to wise counsel is the believer best positioned to hear clearly. You were not designed to navigate this season alone — and neither was your hearing.

Proverbs 11:14

Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

1 John 4:1

Weighing What You Hear

Not every voice is the Lord’s. And one of the greatest dangers of this season is mistaking a feeling, a desire, or even a spiritual-sounding word for the voice of God. The instruction of 1 John 4:1 is not abstract — it is a standing order for every believer who intends to move by the Spirit and not by impulse.

Here are three questions to bring to every word, every prompting, every dream, and every prophetic utterance you receive:

1

Does it align with Scripture?

God will never contradict His own Word. If what you are hearing leads you away from the clear instruction of Scripture — regardless of how right it feels — it is not the Lord. The logos is the final authority, not the confirmation.

2

Does it produce fruit consistent with His character?

A word from God produces peace, clarity, freedom, and a posture of holiness. If what you are hearing produces anxiety, pride, rebellion, or confusion — those are not the fingerprints of the Holy Spirit. Test the fruit, not just the feeling.

3

Does it bear witness with the Spirit over time?

Not the emotion of the moment — but the settled, consistent confirmation of the Holy Spirit across days and weeks. A word from the Lord will stand. You do not need to manufacture its confirmation. It will unfold. Give it time and give it space.

A word from the Lord does not require your anxiety to survive. If it is from Him, it will remain. If it requires you to rush, to override counsel, or to bypass the Word — slow down.

A Word for Right Now

What God Is Saying in This Season

This is not a season for spiritual silence. The Lord is calling His people to a heightened awareness — not primarily of the enemy’s activity, but of His own.

He is speaking about purpose. About positioning. About the assignments that only this generation can fulfill. He is speaking to the church about its compromises — and to individuals about their readiness.

The voice of the Lord in this hour is both personal and prophetic. He is saying the same things He has always said — but with the weight of a clock that is moving. The invitation has not changed. The urgency has.

Position yourself to hear what He is saying — and when you hear it, move.

Practical Steps to Hear Clearly

Spend time in the Word before seeking a word. The logos must precede the rhema. If you are not reading, you will not recognize His voice when He speaks.

Create space for silence. You cannot hear clearly in perpetual noise. Stillness is not a luxury — it is a discipline. Schedule it.

Journal what you sense. Writing forces clarity and creates a record you can test over time. Patterns in your journal are often the voice of God made visible.

Submit what you hear to accountability. A godly, Word-anchored counselor is not a threat to what God is saying — they are a safeguard for it. Lone hearing is high-risk hearing.

Act on what you have already heard. Obedience to the last word positions you for the next one. Unacted revelation is often the reason the next one is not coming.

For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

Romans 8:14

That leading — the leading of Romans 8:14 — is not reserved for a category of believer. It is not for the mature only, or the theologically trained, or those who have had the most spiritual experiences. It is for sons. It is for daughters. It is for every person who has been born of the Spirit of God.

You were not created to navigate this season by sight alone. You were created to be led. And the One who leads you knows your name, your season, your assignment, and what it is going to take to get you there.

His Truth Is Enough

The Truth of God’s Word is sufficient to navigate you through every situation, every circumstance, and every relationship this season will bring — including the ones that require you to hear His voice clearly and move accordingly.

You are not behind. You are not disqualified. Position yourself to hear Him — and when He speaks, trust it enough to move.
